Pokémon of the week #9

Swalot, the Poison Bag Pokémon and the evolved form of Gulpin. Swalot has no teeth, so whatever it eats, it swallows whole, no matter how large the prey is.

I’d be kidding myself if I said that Swalot has any sort of remarkable feature that could make it usable in competitive play. Poor base stats, useless abilities…even its appearance isn’t great. Granted, Poison-typing and it’s passable HP and defences can make it kind of useful in some situations – but only if it comes up against a Fairy-type, most of which have moves to quickly dispatch Swalot. The only reason Swalot exists is to take hits and wear down opponents, which it does quite well, and it does have a few offensive options. However, to be perfectly honest there are a lot of better Poison-types out there, but if using Swalot is your thing, then go for it.

A good moveset that Swalot could use is:

Ability: Liquid Ooze (When the opponent uses a HP-draining attack such as Giga Drain, they take damage instead of replenishing their HP. Useful as Drain Punch, Giga Drain and Leech Seed becoming more common nowadays),.

Item: Leftovers (Restores a little of Swalot’s HP every turn. Handy for a little extra bulk).

  • Curse – boosts Swalot’s Attack and Defence by one stage each. Always handy, and can let Swalot do some acceptable damage.
  • Rest – Swalot sleeps for two turns and full restores its HP. Swalot has the bulk to survive two turns of damage (against some things, anyway), and restoring your health to wear the opponent down a little further is always fun.
  • Sleep Talk – Randomly selects one of Swalot’s moves and uses it while Swalot is asleep. Yes, there’s a chance that it could select Rest, which would fail if Swalot was already asleep, but there’s an equal chance that Swalot would either gain a boost or deal damage.
  • Gunk Shot – At base 120 power and a 30% chance of poisoning the opponent, Gunk Shot is easily Swalot’s best Poison STAB. Watch out for low accuracy though.

Do you have any suggestions for a competitive Swalot, or for next week’s entry Leave it in the comments!
