(R-L: Cara Delevigne (Enchantress), Jared Leto (the Joker), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) and Will Smith (Deadshot) )

Now that the hype over Avengers: Age of Ultron is dying down, the next group of super-powered individuals we’re most looking forward to seeing is the Suicide Squad. A band of supervillains deemed expendable by the government, the Suicide Squad (made up of notable villains such as Harley Quinn, Killer Croc and Captain Boomerang) are the ones sent on missions that would surely kill normal operatives.

Suicide-Squad-1

That’s really all some people would know about the Suicide Squad, so to keep everyone in the loop and give you all an idea of what to expect when you sit down to watch the movie next year, here’s a few tidbits of information that you may not have known before. And besides, everyone loves comic book trivia!

  • The original Suicide Squad first appeared in 1959 in The Brave and the Bold #25, in a story titled The Three Waves of Doom (written by Robert Cannicker and Ross Andrew). Back then, they were a group of World War 2 military misfits, led by Rick Flagg Jnr.
  • The Suicide Squad were inspired by the Dirty Dozen – a group of villainous characters sent on suicidal missions by the government in exchange for freedom and amnesty…if they survived, of course.
  • The first ongoing Suicide Squad series, made up of 66 issues, is famous for bringing many lesser-known villains into the spotlight. The team roster has been constantly changing over the years, but regular members include Rick Flagg Jnr, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang and Bronze Tiger.
  • Villains in the Suicide Squad who have died whilst on missions include Blockbuster, Dr. Light (who, as it turned out, faked his death), Mindboggler, Slipknot, Enforcer and Karma.
  • In 2001, writer Keith Giffin and artist Paco Medina intorduced a newer version of the Suicide Squad. This incarnation was led by Sergeant Rock, as Rick Flagg was thought to be dead at the time.
  • During the DCU’s 2011 reboot known as the New 52, the team line-up was changed drastically, including brand new members such as Black Manta, James Gordon Jnr, King Shark, Deathstroke, and the Joker’s girlfriend, Harley Quinn.

Got anything to add to this list? Do you know something about Task Force X that we don’t? Leave it in the comments!

Suicide Squad will be released in cinemas on August 5th, 2016.
