The full image of Jared Leto as The Joker has finally been revealed!
After weeks of teasing and hinting, Suicide Squad director David Ayer finally displayed his version of the iconic Clown Prince Of Crime on April 25th – the 75th anniversary of The Joker’s first appearance in Batman #2 (April 25th, 1940).
Let’s have a look at him:
Leto’s Joker seems to boast an image that brings to mind a cross between a punk and a mid-90’s rocker, and along with the body art and grill on his teeth (though I’m not sure about the word ‘Damaged’ being inked across his forehead’), he has the completely deranged aspects of Batman’s arch-nemesis down to a T.
The tattoos themselves are interesting – the endless ‘HA HA HA’s and the massive Cheshire Cat-style grin on his arm instantly bring to mind his insanity and clown-like appearance. The jester skull seems to be a reference to himself, and how he brings death and misery wherever he goes, but never fails to laugh at what he’s caused. A closer look seems to reveal the image of a bird on his right arm – a callback to his murder of Jason Todd, perhaps?
Of course, this new incarnation of the Joker will have to undergo the usual flack from those fans who prefer earlier, funnier versions of the character, but that’s all to be expected. Those who would bring Leto down, however, must also remember that certain sceptics were forced to eat their words after blasting the casting choice of Heath Ledger as the Joker. Posthumous Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, anyone?
Jared Leto is a prime part of Suicide Squad, and joining him in the line up are Will Smith as Deadshot, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Karen Fukuhara as Plastique, Scott Eastwood as Steve Trevor and Jim Parrack as Jonny Frost.
Suicide Squad will be released in cinemas on August 5th, 2016.
